Enceladus, the Bright, a concertino for oboe and piano, tells the story of an interplanetary encounter in the age of spaceflight. In 2005, the Cassini space probe on its mission to Saturn, flew by the south pole of Enceladus, a tiny, bright moon just outside Saturn’s rings. As Cassini approached the moon, Enceladus erupted below with a giant geyser and enveloped the Saturn-bound spacecraft. When analyzing the data from this serendipitous collision, scientists back on Earth discovered not only was the craft hit with water, but the water contained chemical ingredients for biological life. In that moment, humans inched ever closer to discovering extraterrestrial life.
Inspired by this story, Enceladus, the Bright aims to immerse the listener in the alien world of Enceladus. The piece depicts the icy brightness of the moon’s surface through its impressionistic arpeggiations, eventually breaking apart into illustrations of the erupting geysers (called cryovolcanoes) with fast, rhythmic music. The piano explodes with expansive gestures that the oboe navigates through, much like the Cassini spacecraft navigating through the deep space in the faraway orbit of Saturn.
