String Quartet No. 1: Chiaroscuro (2022)
III. “Finale”
Chiaroscuro refers to the Renaissance drawing and painting technique of shading to produce a dramatic juxtaposition of light and shadow. Musically, Chiaroscuro exploits this image of brightness and darkness in three contrasting movements. The first illustrates a dark dance, the second illuminates with iridescent light, and the third synthesizes the first two movements into a climactic bright dance.
